The Poster Series — Type Driven Poster
Research your subject.
- Write your objective in the d2l Dropbox in one sentence.
- Define the purpose and function of the poster, the audience, and the information to be
- Find typefaces that express the spirit of the subject. Or use handmade or found type or a combination of handmade and a typeface.
- Design a poster that is type-driven—text type is the star of the poster. If you use any image, it should play a secondary role to the type-driven headline.
- Produce at least twenty sketches. (Must be submitted with final poster on d2l.)
- Produce your final poster
- You can pick the size of your poster (with prior approval), or you can choose to use a standard poster size. 2’x3′ or 3’x2′ .

Huey’s experimental sewn version of Helvetica was created in the Typography course taught by Jordan. Huey later developed it into a motion design project. The designs were part of a campaign in response to the negative environmental impact of fast fashion, a business model that mass produces fashion trends at a low cost. The custom typography features machine-stitched threads to represent microfiber pollution.

Step 3
- Choose two of your best sketches and refine them.
- Establish emphasis through a visual hierarchy.
- Carefully examine the spacing between letters, among words, and between lines of type.
Step 4
- Create a finished solution. This poster is to be completed in InDesign.
- The poster can be designed in a portrait or landscape orientation.
